General information

Purpose

Designed for mixing rubber compounds according to a specified recipe, as well as heating and calendering finished rubber compounds.

Principles

This device is an open two-roll mill designed for preparing plastic, mixed, or hot rubber. The main working components are two hollow rollers, which rotate in opposite directions and are positioned openly. The roller on the operator's side is called the front roller; it can be manually or electrically moved forward and backward to adjust the gap between the rollers, in order to meet operational requirements. The rear roller is fixed and cannot be moved.

Typically, the sizes of both rollers are the same, but they rotate at different speeds relative to each other. The raw rubber material or mixture, under the effect of the rotating rollers, is fed into the gap between them and undergoes intense shear forces, thus achieving the goal of plastic processing or mixing.

Equipment features

Roller heating system: The maximum temperature is +200 °C, maintained by electric or oil temperature controllers. The temperature control accuracy does not exceed ± 3 °C, and the temperature distribution along the roller length does not exceed ± 5 °C. The front and rear rollers are equipped with independent temperature controllers. If the temperature exceeds the limit, the heating device automatically shuts off, and the corresponding information is displayed on the control panel.

Roller cooling system: Water or oil. If necessary, the cooling of the rollers is achieved by passing a water flow through a special technical opening. The cooling water is supplied from the workshop's water circulation system.

Emergency stop system: The working area of the equipment must be equipped with a protective screen. If the screen is opened without permission, the rotation of the rollers must be stopped. A lever should be installed in the roller area for emergency reversal of the rollers or to stop them and return to the initial state. The equipment must be equipped with an emergency button.

The equipment must be equipped with an exhaust system to remove substances released during the material heating process.

Speed and heating control: Independent temperature controllers for the front and rear rollers. Independent speed sensors for the front and rear rollers or the installation of a friction coefficient.

Operation and control: Managed via the front panel or a computer. Roller parameters, such as roller temperature and roller speed (friction coefficient), are entered through the front panel or PC and displayed on the front panel or PC.

Questions and answers

In which other industries are two-roll mills used?

Open two-roll mills are also used in other industries, such as plastics processing.

In cable compound production, an open mill can directly process powdered materials mixed according to a recipe into molten mass, which is then pressed into sheets for further processing on granulators. In a linoleum production line, it can directly supply uniformly mixed pigment mass for the base of fabric flooring. Additionally, reclaimed plastic films (sheets) can be processed on an open mill for reuse.
