Rigid frame type machine general information

Rigid frame type machines are a variant of cage-type stranding machines that don’t have the pay-off device, because the workpiece on the coils is installed directly into the stranding stands, which greatly simplifies the technology. In the torsion part, the pay-off coils with wire are arranged in 3 rows as close as possible to the rotation axis, it allows to increase the rotation speed to 180-350 rpm.

Rigid frame type lines is used for stranding round and sectoral (profiled) cores of power cables. Conventional structure is 6+12+18+24+30.

There are also more complex lines of this type. A cantilever-type passive pay-off machine is more often used as the central pay-off device, and it is also equipped with an additional large-sized pay-off device if it’s necessary.

A column-type or portal-type take-up machine can be used as a take-up device.

The movement direction of the line proceeds from left to right:

The line length depends on the configuration and the cage design.

  • Cage length 6V-5200 mm
  • Cage length 12V-6600 mm
  • Cage length 18V-8000 mm
  • Cage length 24V-9400 mm

The example of 1+12+18 line operational principle. Workpieces pass through the cage individual bandwidth channels system and exit through holes of the outside separator.

The central workpiece in the center, and 12 workpiece (wires) from the 12V cage are overlapped around it.

Cores are crimped in the die, where stranding process occurs due to the cage rotation. Through this process, the first lay (1+12) is made. When passing through the sealing device with pre-twisting function, the lay receives a seal by using crimping pairs of rear rolls and additional stranding, which is necessary in the sector cores manufacturing.

After passing the next 18V cage, 18 workpiece (wires) will be applied to 1+12 lay (wires) in a similar way. The stranding algorithm of different cores structure is identical.

Q&A for rigid frame type machine

What is the difference between rigid frame stranding machines and cage-type stranding machines with the pay-off device?

Rigid frame machines don’t have the pay-off device, and the workpiece is installed directly into the stranding stands, which simplifies the technology.

How are the pay-off coils with wire arranged in rigid frame stranding machines?

The pay-off coils are arranged in 3 rows as close as possible to the rotation axis, increasing the rotation frequency

What additional components can be included in more complex rigid frame lines?

In more complex lines, it can be used additional pay-off devices, both passive console-type and large-sized, as well as different types of take-up devices.

What is the cage length in different configurations?

The cage length in different configurations is: 6 V-5200 mm, 12 V-6600 m, 18 V-8000 m, 24 V-9400 mm.

How does the core stranding in rigid frame stranding lines occur?

The workpieces pass through the cage individual bandwidth channels system, cores are overlapped around the central workpiece, and stranding process occurs due to the cage rotation.

What additional steps are included for sector cores manufacturing?

For sector cores manufacturing, it’s used sealing device is used with help of crimping pairs of rear rolls and additional stranding
